Introduction

The Civil Service for Peace (SCP) of Brot für die Welt, in cooperation with its partners in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Mano River Region in West Africa, seeks to strengthen civilian non-state actors at local, regional and national levels around two main objectives:

  • Contributing to overcoming regional, ethnic, political, religious, and other fragmentations.
  • Strengthen local initiatives by working with people as actors and not victims of change.

These objectives stem from contextual analyzes and visions of peace and stability developed together with our local partners. Given the richness and diversity of the work of the SCP partners, we have decided to propose in this brochure an outline of the many approaches to peace work. This will involve redefining what we mean by the concept of peace, reflecting on the perceptions of the SCP and its logics of intervention.

Then the contributions of different partners will allow the reader to delve into the universe of each other’s peace efforts. Finally, we return to the bridges between us and to our attempts at networking which are for us essential elements of the work of peace in a tearing Africa and in a globalized world.

We thank all our colleagues from the partner organizations and all the support professionals who contributed during the October 2008 workshop in Goma and by sending descriptions of their work, including Jessie Bohr, Willy Bongolo, Odile Bula Bula, Birgit Embalo , Pierre Kahenga, Emilie Lukombo, Lyn Lusi, Hortence Kavuo, André Ma siala, Zeffy Mata Bantala, Angèle Mazimi, Murhega Mashanda, Ibond Rupas A’nzam and Donat Tunamau.
